Patricia Kirby

U.S.-born Patricia sketches with watercolours on canvas, yupo or printing paper textured with gesso, and often includes words or a haiku-like poem in her work in an attempt to make the whole more than the sum of the parts. She strives for fresh spontaneous expression and purity of colour.

In Montreal, she studied Chinese and Western watercolour techniques for eight years with Hong Kong native Ming Ma. “He taught us much more than technique,” she says, referring to his care in developing his students’ eyes for composition, colour and artistic maturity.
