SPOTLIGHT

Michael Rouleau

Mike Rouleau
Michael Rouleau studied graphic design at ESAG ( École Supérieure des Arts Graphique) in Paris, France from 1970 to 1972. Although not a fine arts program, the school put a strong emphasis on art history, as well as fine arts in general. Michael worked as a creative director/head designer for various ad agencies and design studios in Canada 1975 – present.

He describes his work and influences as:

"None of my work is spontaneous – it all developed and evolved over time. I think that if you’ve made a painting and you are satisfied, hopefully it speaks for itself, and whatever it says to the viewer, is what it should be. I am not everyone’s cup of tea, I realize that “message” paintings have a small audience, but I like to have a story in what I do. I like the viewer to put in a bit of work in figuring out what the story is. Maybe it’s “puzzle art”.

Influences
Everything I see, feel and experience. I love architecture, particularly post modern.
The artists I most admire are the ones breaking rules like Basquiat, Bacon, Warhol"

Each person takes something a little different from the same image, and I’m happy with that."

Michael joined the Foyer Gallery artists this year. Do not miss Michael's works in our upcoming shows!
