Gwen Frankton is an eco-artist. A childhood spent in fields and woods with naturalist parents prepared her well for a lifetime connection with the natural world. After completing a BFA and an MA in Educational Technology, she lived and worked for many years in Nunavut. Her professional life embraced education and educational publishing. She also created and exhibited a substantial body of work chronicling the plant life of the tundra and ever changing aspects of the ocean and shore. A highlight of this fruitful period was the production of a series of field guides concerning the flora and fauna of Nunavut.
Gwen now lives in both Ottawa and Nova Scotia, on the Fundy shore. Her ecological interests have expanded to embrace ecosystem diversity and species richness. It takes the form of large drawings, paintings, pastels and hand drawn maps under the broad themes of the ocean’s edge and the watershed.
My paintings and drawings communicate ecological reality with a focus on biodiversity. They draw on both the visual presentation of nature and its psychological and emotional effects. My paintings stir our memories of, and sense of connection with, the natural world.
